Palestinians Hurl Explosives, Hand Grenades at Israeli Troops During Gaza Border Clashes

The Israeli army said late on Saturday it was using riot control measures to disperse a protest, which came a day after three Palestinians died during Gaza border marches

Some 450 Palestinian protesters rallied along the Gaza border for a demonstration on Saturday night.

Gathered in at least four spots, demonstrators hurled rocks and hand grenades toward Israeli troops. At least three hand grenades and two explosive devices were hurled at Israeli soldiers.

The Israeli military said it was using riot control measures as well as live fire to turn away the protesters.

Meanwhile, Gaza's Health Ministry reported that Suhaib Abu Kashef, a 16-year-old Palestinian who was severely wounded during previous protests at the Gaza border, succumbed to his wounds.

Abu Kashef had been wounded by live ammunition east of Khan Younis on August 3. His death brings the total number number of Palestinians killed by Israeli fire during the weekly protests that began in March to 178. 

The clashes at the Gaza border on Saturday come after three Palestinians were killed by Israeli army fire during confrontations along the Israel-Gaza border fence Friday.

According to Gaza's Health Ministry, one of those killed was a 12-year-old boy, Shadi Abed Elall, who was shot in the head east of Jabalya, a city north of Gaza City. The other fatalities were identified as Hani Ramzi  Afana and Mohammed Shaqoura, both age 21.

A total of 248 Palestinians were injured during the protests, 120 of whom by live Israeli military fire, the ministry said. Six of the wounded are said to be in serious condition.

Some 13,000 Palestinians protested in several locations along the border, the Israel Defense Forces said, adding that demonstrators burned tires and hurled stones and firebombs at Israeli forces and the fence.

The IDF said it responded with riot control measures in accordance with the open-fire policy.
