An Israeli soldier shot a Palestinian assailant dead after he attempted to stab two soldiers in the West Bank Tuesday, south of Nablus, the army said in a statement.

The Palestinian Health Ministry confirmed the death of the assailant, who was later identified as 17-year-old Atallah Mohammed Rayan, a high school student from Qarawat Bani Hassan, northeast of the settlement of Ariel.

"The terrorist arrived at Gitai junction and tried to stab a squad commander and a female combat soldier that were serving as security at the junction," the IDF said in a statement.

"The combat soldier and the assailant briefly wrestled, and after he tried to stab her several times, the commander shot and killed him."

The army also confirmed that no soldiers were injured in the incident.
