Three family members were injured on Friday in a fire that broke out in a motel in Jerusalem. One of the injured is in serious condition while the other sustained light wounds. The police suspect that the fire was set deliberately and have arrested a Palestinian man employed at the motel. The motive is not thought to have been political.

According to the fire department, the motel was operating without a fire and emergency services permit. Fire department Cmdr. Moshe Suissa summoned the motel owners to a hearing ahead of shutting the place down.

The fire broke out close to 2 A.M. on Friday. The fire department said 10 people trapped inside were extricated, most of them unharmed. Magen David Adom paramedics took the injured to Shaare Zedek Medical Center after intensive care crews had treated seven people at the scene.

Suissa added that he suspected the motel was operating without safety measures such as fireproofing and protection against smoke and heat, as well as escape routes.
