IBA Bars Radio, TV Reporters From Gaza

Voice of Israel and Channel 1 reporters are no longer allowed into the Gaza Strip following the Israel Defense Forces withdrawal from the area, the temporary director general of the Israel Broadcasting Authority announced yesterday.

Yair Aloni said concern for the reporters' safety was the reason behind his decision.

"Now, the IDF has left," he said. "If, God forbid, something was to happen to one of the reporters, we don't know how quickly we'd be able to get them out. Just recently, after all, an Italian journalist was abducted there.

"Caution seems to be appropriate for the coming weeks at least," he said. "There are sufficient alternative sources of information, which I cannot comment on as a journalist, but our reporters will not be putting together stories from within the Strip."
