Hirchson, Eini Will Meet to Avert Strike

Finance Minister Abraham Hirchson, Interior Minister Roni Bar-On, and Histadrut Chairman Ofer Eini will hold additional talks today and tomorrow aimed at resolving the issue of withheld wages for employees of municipalities and local and religious authorities.

No progress was made yesterday, and Eini said he would call a general strike should no agreement be reached.

Hirchson presented the treasury's proposals: reducing the number of employees whose wages are withheld to 650 by Wednesday, transferring NIS 18 million to religious authorities to allow them to pay withheld wages, and continued talks to reach a complete solution to the crisis.

The treasury and Histadrut disagree on the number of employees affected. The Histadrut says 5,000 employees have withheld wages, while the treasury says it is no more than 1,100.
