Health Minister Yaakov Litzman slammed the consumption of junk food in Israel on Tuesday, specifically targeting fast-food giant McDonald's.

If the mention of burgers hasn't sent you running in the direction of the nearest drive-thru, here are a few recommendations more in line with the minister's thinking.

To start out with a staple, give an Israeli chopped salad a go.

Roasted whole cauliflower seems to be everywhere today, but the dish's origins can be traced to an Israeli celebrity chef and a Shabbat dinner a long time ago. Try out Eyal Shani's whole roasted cauliflower recipe.

Shakshuka is also a healthy must. Watch an easy guide to making the most delicious egg dish in the Middle East.

And now for the trimmings (or the real deal, we don’t want to cause another fight). Homemade hummus and tahini, here you come.
