Hollywood heartthrob George Clooney has his heart set on being governor of California.

The 53-year-old wants to run the 2018 race with the Democratic Party, following in the footsteps of Arnold Schwarzenegger, the former governor and Hollywood actor.

"George is hugely popular with Democrats and where better to be than Governor of California, home of Hollywood?," a source told the U.K.'s Daily Mirror newspaper. "It has always been a huge stronghold for the party and one that has a proven record for getting politicians into the Oval office."

According to the Daily Mirror, Clooney will launch his political career after marrying British human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin in September this year. The actor has reportedly rejected a number of film projects to run for office.

The actor counts U.S. President Barack Obama as good friend, and recently attended a private screening at the White House for "The Monument Men," his most recent release.

In the meantime, Clooney and Alamuddin are said to be hunting for wedding venues, and would most like to marry in Venice, Italy.
