Basketball / Rishon Letzion's Last-second Tip Downs Defending Champions Hap. Gilboa/Galil

Raymar Morgan's put-back with less than a second to play in the fourth quarter proved to be the winning basket for Maccabi Rishon Letzion, which defeated defending Super League champions Hapoel Gilboa/Galil Elyon 76-74 at the Gan Ner sports hall.

With the victory, Maccabi jumps ahead of Gilboa in the standings, as both teams entered the game with a 2-2 record.

With the score tied at 74-74, Rishon's Dwayne Mitchell drove to the basket for a layup against the Gilboa defense. As the ball rolled off of the rim, Morgan stormed the basket unimpeded and leaped to tap in the winner with 0.5 seconds showing on the clock.

"It's always disappointing to lose in this fashion, but that is part of the game," said Gilboa coach Lior Lubin. "Obviously the way we played tonight won't be good enough for [Eurocup] competition."

Russia to announce fate of national coach Blatt

Sergei Chernov, the outgoing president of the Russian Basketball Federation, said yesterday that a final decision regarding the future of national team coach David Blatt will be announced on December 2, most likely following Maccabi Tel Aviv's Euroleague game against Zalgiris.

Blatt, who is currently the head coach of Maccabi, appeared before the federation's board of directors last Friday to submit a report on the national team's recent appearance at the World Championships in Turkey. Board members deemed the Russian squad's seventh-place finish "satisfactory." Russia was eliminated in the quarterfinals by the United States, which went on to capture the crown.

Chernov added that Blatt's future with Russia also depends on whether Maccabi's management will agree to allow their coach to juggle two jobs.

Kadir to take leavefrom Maccabi

Elishay Kadir, the center who has had difficulty finding playing time with Maccabi Tel Aviv, has agreed with management's plans to loan him to either Maccabi Haifa or his former club Gilboa/Galil.

Kadir, who signed a three-year contract in the offseason with Maccabi, has been unable to crack Blatt's rotation due to the depth at the center position.
