A female Israeli soldier was seriously wounded on Monday morning in a stabbing at the Rachel Crossing, leading from south Jerusalem to Rachel's Tomb in Bethlehem.

Magen David Adom paramedics gave the soldier, a young woman about 20 years old, initial treatment at the scene of the stabbing. She was transferred to Hadassah Hospital Ein Karen with wounds to her upper body.

An initial police investigation reveals that a Palestinian woman approached the checkpoint, pulled out a knife, and stabbed the soldier. Security forces on site detained the assailant and confiscated two additional knives.

Last week, an Israeli border policeman was critically wounded in a stabbing attack at the Damascus Gate in Jerusalem. The officer was stabbed in the neck, but managed to shoot the attacker before collapsing. The officer's condition stabilized after undergoing surgery, the hospital said Sunday afternoon.

According to an Israel Police spokesperson, the perpetrator was an 18-year-old Palestinian who lives in the West Bank. He was evacuated to Hadasah, Ein Kerem hospital in critical condition.
