Casino mogul Sheldon Adelson, a leading donor to the Republican Party, will refrain from involvement in the United States presidential primaries until “well into 2016,” Bloomberg reported on Thursday.

“Any support of a presidential candidate is at least a year away,” Adelson's top political adviser Andy Abboud told Bloomberg in an interview.

The primaries, in which the Republican and Democratic parties elect their presidential candidates, are due to kick off in January 2016, with the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary. The presidential election will be held in November.

The 81-year-old billionaire, who owns the Israel Hayom newspaper in Israel and is an influential supporter of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, spent more money than anyone else on the 2012 presidential race.

The Adelson family is believed to have spent some $93 million on candidates and political action committees in the previous elections, first supporting former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and then backing Mitt Romney after he won the Republican nomination.

Adelson and his wife Miriam are co-chairs of a March 3 fundraiser for South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham's presidential exploratory group. The event will follow Netanyahu's scheduled address to Congress.
