U.S. airstrikes in Iraq have killed several top Islamic State leaders, the Pentagon says.

Strikes in recent weeks have killed Haji Mutazz, a deputy to ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi; Abd al Basit, the head of military operations in Iraq; and Radwin Talib, the group's governor in Mosul; a defence official said.

The U.S. also says that Kurdish fighters have regained control of around 100 square kilometers of territory in Sinjar near the Syrian border from Islamic State with the help of more than 50 US airstrikes.

"Combined efforts like these are having a significant effect on Daesh's [ISIS's] ability to command and control, to resupply, and to conduct manoeuvring," said Lieutenant General James Terry, head of U.S. operations against Islamic State, using an acronym for the group.
