An Israeli soldier was killed in the course of the IDF's ground incursion into the Gaza Strip on Thursday night.

The soldier, Eitan Barak, a 20-year-old sergeant from Herzliya, was apparently killed by light arms fire. He was evacuated by helicopter to the Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon, where his death was pronounced. The IDF is investigating whether friendly fire was involved.

Funeral services will be held in Herzliya on Sunday at 17:00, the IDF Spokesman said, adding that the soldier's family has requested the press refrain from covering the event.

This is the first Israeli soldier to be killed in action since Operation Protective Edge was launched 10 days ago. An Israeli citizen, Dror Khenin, was killed by a Gaza-fired mortar shell on Wednesday.
