Christians Celebrate Easter Sunday in Jerusalem

In Jerusalem, Christian pilgrims from around the globe were marking Easter Sunday, celebrating the resurrection of Jesus on the third day after his crucifixion.

Latin Patriarch Fouad Twal, the highest-ranking Roman Catholic representative in the Holy Land, was scheduled to lead the morning Mass in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, in the Christian Quarter of the walled, historic Old City of Jerusalem.

Roman Emperor Constantine the Great ordered the construction of the basilica on the site believed to be Golgotha. An important pilgrimage destination for hundreds of years, it is considered to mark where Jesus was crucified and rose from the dead, and as such is the holiest Christian site in the world.

Hundreds attended the Easter Vigil service in the church Saturday evening.
