Britain's minister for the Middle East Alistair Burt marked the fifth anniversary of the abduction of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit with a special video message calling for Shalit's immediate and unconditional release.

"Its absolutely time for Gilad to be released, and the impact of this in the region would be immense," Burt said in the video on the U.K. foreign office YouTube page.

Burt said that it was "grossly unfair and wrong" that Gilad has been denied access to the Red Cross throughout his five years in captivity.

On Wednesday, U.K. Foreign Secretary William Hague also called on Gilad Shalit's immediate release.
