Disengaging With Pain
The dominant theme of the new Gush Katif Museum in Jerusalem is that we will not forget and we will not forgive.
On Monday, the seventh of Av, I visited the Gush Katif Museum in Jerusalem. The seventh of Av and not July 28, because on this Hebrew date, the day before the eve of the Tisha B'Av fast four years ago, the residents of Gush Katif were forceably evacuated from their homes. I write "residents" and not "settlers," because there are no "settlers" in the Gush Katif Museum, only mityashvim (meaning those who reside). There are no settlements, and actually there is no museum. There is a memorial room, and the memorialization is connected more to the expulsion and less to the place where it occured. A memorial is a good way to shape the past.
