A Palestinian man who died in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday was killed in an accidental explosion, a Palestinian investigator said.

Palestinian hospital officials and relatives of the man said earlier Tuesday that the man was killed by Israel Defense Forces tank fire. Mohammed Fara, 45, died while working in his marble factory about 600 meters from the Gaza-Israel border fence.

The IDF denied involvement, and the Palestinian interior ministry opened an investigation.

A Palestinian security official familiar with the investigation said Fara was drilling through a metal fuel tank that accidentally exploded. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

The IDF said it had been informed by the Palestinians that the man had been handling a gas canister that exploded.

At least 16 Palestinians were wounded Tuesday morning in Nablus during the clashes with troops, who had apparently entered the northern West Bank city to arrest suspected militants.

Soldiers shot three stonethrowers, critically wounding two, in clashes in the southern part of Nablus during the raid.

Palestinian witnesses said a scuffle broke out between Palestinian youths and IDF soldiers, and an exchange of fire opened between armed Palestinians and troops when army jeeps and personnel vehicles entered the city,

Two IDF soldiers were lightly wounded earlier Tuesday morning by a bomb blast that went off during the operation in Nablus, Israel Radio reported.

The two were rushed to hospital to receive medical treatment.

Military sources said Palestinian gunmen also opened fire several times at the troops.

Also early Tuesday, IDF soldiers arrested six Islamic Jihad militants in overnight operations in the villages of Anabta and Salfit, near Tul Karm.

The IDF regularly raids Nablus, a bastion for militants behind suicide bomb attacks.
