The American Jewish Committee slammed on Monday a full-page ad in the New York Times commissioned by a pro- Israel group criticizing U.S. President Barack Obama’s policies toward Israel.

The ad, sponsored by a group called the “Emergency Committee for Israel”, was headlined "Tell President Obama: Enough. It's time to stand with Israel”.

"Let me be absolutely clear, AJC is a strictly non-partisan advocacy organization," said AJC Executive Director David Harris. "But we cannot be silent. This ad is highly objectionable, indeed counter-productive, to its stated aim of supporting Israel.”

The AJC director stressed that particularly as the impending UN vote on Palestinian statehood draws near, assailing the Obama administration is an unwise move. Harris added that the U.S.” laudably has announced its intention, come what may, to block Palestinian ambitions in the Security Council and work against a Palestinian-initiated resolution in the General Assembly,” making the group’s decision to place the ad in particularly poor taste.

He continued to praise U.S. policy toward Israel, commending its decision to " be absent from the tenth anniversary commemoration of the ignoble Durban Conference, which devolved into an anti-Israel, anti-Semitic hatefest.”

Harris clarified that although the AJC is non-partisan and does not support or oppose candidates for elected office, "we do endorse policies we agree with and oppose those we don't when those policies impact AJC's urgent mission. In that spirit, we appreciate the administration's determined efforts at the UN these days to support Israel, stand up to Palestinian brinkmanship, and show no tolerance for anti-Semitism."
