Cafe Rimon triumphed on opening day in the Bonkers AFI Softball League last week, topping Five Towns Jewish Times 13-1, while the defending Holyland Series champs, Jerry's Kids, emerged from a pitchers' duel with a razor-thin 2-1 victory over Kids of Courage.
Captain Gershon Jacobovitz led early favorites Cafe Rimon with a barrage of hits, and Cafe Rimon played flawless defense to notch the opening-day victory.
Jerry's Kids won in the final inning as Micha Muskal doubled and scored on Aharon Garfunkle's single. In a gem of a pitchers' duel, veterans Uri Zimmerman and Jonathan Cohen brilliantly matched each other frame for frame, stymieing a parade of batters with a combination of speed and changeups. In the mid-innings, Zimmerman even mixed in some eephus pitches, before going with the fastball again down the stretch.
In a thrilling finish, Sendy Berger hit a sizzling liner for the Chassidim to rally past Lobos 10-9. Yanky Guttman saved the game with a perfect laser of a throw to nail a runner at the plate. Lobos stayed a step ahead of the Chassidim until Effy Webber's 3-run shot over the fence in deep center field tied the score at 8-8. In a clutch performance, pitcher Yoeli Lipshitz allowed only one run in the final three innings against the hard-hitting Lobos, and walked zero throughout the game. Guttman had three hits and Webber added two.
Lake Como broke open a tight game with a 9-run inning to beat AJ 17-1. Eli Horowitz, Marc Richter and Andrew Turk all homered to power the Lake Como attack. Yehuda Wolfset had four hits and Horowitz added a triple, while catcher Nathan Chatman kept AJ's runners honest, picking off a runner at first.
Other scores: Chassidim 13, Lake Como 9; Meridian 15, Charedim 1; Milk and Cookies 10, Jerry's Kids 8; Cafe Rimon 14, Copia 1; Lobos 9, Five Towns Jewish Times 5; Kids of Courage 19, AJ 0.
