Uzi Even, a chemistry professor at Tel Aviv University, is to be the first self-declared gay Knesset member from next month.

Even, number 13 on Meretz's list, will replace Professor Amnon Rubinstein who intends to retire from political life three weeks after the opening of the Knesset winter session in mid-October.

Former Meretz secretary-general Benny Temkin, who is number 12 on the list, is withdrawing. Temkin, a businessman staying in Mexico, yesterday informed Meretz Party leader Yossi Sarid he is stepping down for personal and family reasons.

Even yesterday said he will focus on issues of science, technology and education. He also said he would represent the gay community in the Knesset and try to introduce legislation which would improve conditions for gays and gay couples regarding inheritance, taxation, and other rights.

Even is aware that his days in the Knesset are numbered, and hopes to be elected for another term on Meretz's next list.
