Author David Grossman: Settlers Abuse Palestinians

Grossman, 300 activists participate in weekly protest against Jewish takeover of East Jerusalem.

Renowned Israeli author and peace activist David Grossman accused settlers and the political right of abusing Palestinians and destroying the chance for a peace agreement while participating in a protest in East Jerusalem on Friday.

The weekly demonstration in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood is held to protest a Jewish takeover of Palestinian homes in East Jerusalem through the use of ownership documents dating from the period of the British mandate in Palestine.

This Friday's protest drew 300 demonstrators, including Grossman and Meretz MK, Ilan Gilon. Unlike demonstrations in previous weeks, the police didn't disperse protestors or make any arrests.

The Jerusalem Magistrate's Court ruled Thursday that public demonstrations in Sheikh Jarrah are legal so long as they do not disturb the public order and disrupt traffic.

Speaking to the protestors, Grossman said, "Sometimes, it's not possible to sit and be silent. Settlers and the political right aided by the government, the legal system, and economic powers abuse the Palestinians in 1,001 different ways."

"They complicate the situation to such an extent that a peace agreement becomes impossible and in a general way, destroy our future," Grossman said.

Grossman's son Uri died in combat during the 2006 Second Lebanon War.
