Israel's Shahar Zubari Wins European Windsurfing Championship

Zubari led the field for the entire competition to take home gold in home waters in Tel Aviv.

Israeli windsurfer Shahar Zubari won a gold medal in familiar waters Saturday, winning the RS:X European Championships in Tel Aviv.

Zubari, who won a bronze medal in the same event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, led the field for the duration of the six-day event. He finished third in the final race Saturday after only needing to finish in the top eight to claim the gold.

Frenchmen Julien Bontemps and Samuel Launay won the silver and bronze medals, while another Israeli, Nimrod Mashiah, finished in tenth position.

Israel had less success in the women's tournament, with Maayan Davidovich finishing in seventh place behind winner Marina Alabau of Spain.

Davidovich began the final race in fourth place overall but a disappointing performance on Saturday meant she missed out on a podium finish.
