Nevo becomes second Israeli to qualify for 2012 Olympics, joining Nimrod Shapira Bar-Or.

Israeli swimmer Gal Navo secured his place in the 2012 London Summer Olympics on Wednesday, Army Radio reported.

Nevo placed 15th in the 200 meter individual medley at the FINA World Championships in Shanghai on Wednesday morning, which he finished with a time of 1:59.98. This qualified him for both the semifinals of the championships and the 2012 Olympics, for which he had to meet the criterion of 2:00.17.

Gal Nevo will join teammate Nimrod Shapira Bar-Or, who became the first on the Israeli team to qualify for the London Olympics on Monday. Shapira Bar-On qualified for the semifinal of the 200 meter freestyle, but he finished in 15th place with a time of 48.59 seconds.

On Sunday, Nevo finished 45th in the 100 meter breaststroke in a heat that drew attention when his Iranian competitor Mohammed Alirezaei withdrew.

Unfortunately, this is what usually happens its crazy, Yitzhak Kramer, the head of the Israeli delegation, said. This competition is about sport, not politics, and you need to separate the two. Thats what is supposed to be nice about sport."

Alirezaei was the only athlete in the 83-man field who did not start that heat.

2012 will be Nevo's second Olympics, after he swam with the Israeli team in the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008.
