Remand of Actor Assi Dayan for Domestic Violence Extended

Controversial actor, director accused of repeatedly assaulting partner, threatening to kill her.

The remand of award-winning actor and film director Assi Dayan was extended late Saturday for two days after he was arrested Saturday on suspicion he had repeatedly assaulted his partner and threatened to kill her.

The Magistrates Court extended Dayan's remand in his absence after his doctor ordered him to remain under supervision in hospital.

Dayan, 64, was apprehended at his Tel Aviv home after his partner filed a police complaint. Police will ask to extend his remand at the Tel Aviv District Court later on Saturday.

The son of Israel's mythical general and politician Moshe Dayan, Assi Dayan is one of the most prominent figures in the Israeli film industry. He is the father of four children, including the journalist and actor Lior Dayan.

Despite Dayan's artistic credentials, he has become involved in a series of controversies. A year ago, for example, his nude photo appeared on the cover of Yedioth Ahronot's weekend magazine, and he compared his sorry physical and mental state to Israel's.
