Israeli Ambassador Presents Credentials to East Timor's Gusmao

DILI, East Timor - Israel's ambassador to East Timor Thursday presented his credentials to President Xanana Gusmao at a ceremony in the new nation's capital, Dili.

Ytzhak Shoham is currently ambassador to Singapore. He will continue holding that post while taking on responsibilities in East Timor.

"We are willing to share with East Timor our experience and try to work together to bring the level of the country to what the East Timorese deserve," Shoham said.

Several dozen countries have opened diplomatic links with East Timor since it became independent on May 20. There are 12 residential ambassadors in Dili.

Shoham will continue living in Singapore.

Neighboring Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation, has never recognized the state of Israel.
