Basketball / Mariupol Moves for Galil's Mizrahi

Ukrainian club Azovmash Mariupol yesterday made a surprise offer for Galil Elyon small forward Moshe Mizrahi.

Ukrainian club Azovmash Mariupol yesterday made a surprise offer for Galil Elyon small forward Moshe Mizrahi.

If Galil releases the 25-year-old, he will leave immediately to join former Hapoel and Maccabi Tel Aviv point guard Lior Lubin at the Ukrainian club and will dive straight into its playoff series.

Mariupol finished second in the regular season with a 24-3 record, but is 2-1 down in its playoff series with Kiev.

The Ukrainians are offering Mizrahi a $250,000 contract until the end of next season.

"I was very surprised by the offer. It is something I have never even dreamed of. I would like to thank Galil for a wonderful period."

"Moshe is a very important player to us, but we won't stand in his way. He has received a financial offer that only Maccabi Tel Aviv can match in Israel," said Galil general manager Yadin Cohen.

Mizrahi, who averaged 13.1 points in the regular season and 10.1 in the playoffs, becomes the second starting player Galil coach Oded Katash has lost this season after guard Christian Dalmau returned to Puerto Rico for personal reasons.

Joining Mizrahi at Mariupol will be Hapoel Jerusalem point guard William Avery.
