The men were filmed from a window of a neighboring building trying to attack police who arrived at the scene, after stabbing the soldier to death.
The suspects apparently wanted to attract police closer to them by dragging the body of the soldier, who has been identified as Lee Rigby, 25, from Manchester, into the middle of the street. The video shows one of the men, Michael Adebolajo, 28, running toward officers while wielding a blade, as his partner, thought to be Michael Adebowale, 22, aims his gun at them.
As he runs, Adebolajo, who was wearing a black hat, is seen dropping one of his knives and transferring the other into his right hand. He is less than a meter away from the police when they fire two shots at him, apparently not seeing the second man with the gun. Adebolajo is injured and lies on the street.
Meanwhile, the second man starts to run in the direction of the officers with his weapon drawn. As he disappears behind a tree, four shots ring out and he is seen collapsing next to a road sign. Eyewitness reports suggest that one of these was discharged by the suspect's weapon.
Around eight minutes before police arrived on the scene, the two suspects were seen talking to passersby. One woman tried to assist the dying man.
The attack took place next to the Woolwich army barracks. The two suspects are said to have run over the off-duty soldier with their vehicle before stabbing him repeatedly. An attempt may have also been made to sever his head.
An eyewitness named James related that the attackers dragged the soldier's body into the street, waved their weapons around and asked passersby to film them. The British Broadcasting Company reported that the attackers shouted "Allahu akbar – God is Great – during the attack.
