Convicted Israeli-American spy Jonathan Pollard was hospitalized after collapsing in jail on Saturday, according to a message received by his wife.

In recent weeks, he had been complaining of severe pains. The current state of his health is unknown.

Pollard's wife Esther recently discussed her husband's status with President Shimon Peres, asking him what actions he was taking to get him released.

Pollard has been imprisoned in a U.S. jail for the past 27, after receiving a life sentence in 1987 for spying for Israel. Before that, he worked as a civilian analyst for U.S. Navy intelligence.

He was granted Israeli citizenship in 1995, but Israel only admitted to paying him in exchange for classified information in 1998.

Pollard has been hospitalized a number of times in recent years. In a number of those cases, his situation was defined as life-threatening.
