Here's a protest against a gasoline excise tax increase. But for January at least, Israeli drivers got a break, in the form of a 9.1% drop in the cost of a liter of gasoline.Credit: Tali Meyer

Gas prices down 9.6%

Gasoline prices were reduced by 63 agorot (16 cents) a liter, or 9.1%, as of Wednesday to 6.27 shekels for 95-octane fuel at self-service pumps. The reduction brings the total over the past six months to 18%. The latest cut follows lower gasoline prices in Europe and an inflation-related cut in the taxes imposed on gas, although the rate remains quite stiff at 64%. (Avi Bar-Eli)

Bus-train coordination

Starting January 1, 20 bus lines will coordinate their schedules with train times as part of a joint project between the Transportation Minstry, Israel Railways and bus operators to provide better connections. The schedule changes will include buses running in Ashdod, Hod Hasharon, Kfar Sava, Ness Ziona, Petah Tikva and Zichron Ya’acov, as well as some smaller communities. The move includes buses operated by Egged, Kavim, Metropoline and Ta’avura and includes some new lines. (Daniel Schmil)
