MK Ayelet Shaked (Habayit Hayehudi), who is slated to receive the culture and sports portfolio, has suggested that on her ministerial appointment she resign from the Knesset to enable another party member to become a Member of Knesset thus increasing the party’s strength.

Habayit Hayehudi is demanding, however, that the coalition partners undertake legislation that would enable Shaked to return to the Knesset if she leaves the cabinet.

Under the coalition agreement signed last week between the ruling Likud party and United Torah Judaism (UTJ), the prime minister would sponsor a bill enabling one MK who is appointed minister to resign from the Knesset. The agreement applies to factions of up to 12 MKs.

The minister may return to the Knesset once his ministerial appointment is over, while the last MK from his faction to have entered the House will resign.

After losing a third of its seats in the election, Habayit Hayehudi is anxious to increase its presence and power in the Knesset. If the legislation is implemented, then former MK Shuli Mualem (Habayit Hayehudi) will be able to regain her Knesset seat by taking Shaked’s place.
