Hamas security services arrested three Islamic Jihad activists on Wednesday on suspicion of involvement in the firing of a Grad rocket at Israel on Tuesday night, according to security sources in Gaza.

The Islamic Jihad security apparatus participated in the arrest, having been convinced that the three were involved in the firing, Al-Quds newspaper reported.

No armed faction has taken responsibility for the rocket firing, though Israel has blamed Islamic Jihad.

If Islamic Jihad members were indeed responsible for the firing, they acted alone and without the support of the movement's leadership, sources in Gaza said.

Following last summer's war in Gaza, Hamas has reportedly has been making strenuous efforts to avoid infringements of the ceasefire with Israel.

The rocket exploded in an open area near Gan Yavne, south of Ashdod, the Israel Defense Forces announced. No damage was reported, but medical services said a 15-year-old girl from Ashdod arrived at the Barzilai Medical Center in Ashkelon suffering from shock.

Israeli security officials said they believe that the rocket fire was carried out by the military wing of Islamic Jihad, apparently following an internal dispute within its ranks over the appointment of a new military wing commander in north Gaza.
