First Snow Falls on Israel's Mount Hermon

A thin layer of snow covered the area of the lower funicular Tuesday; rain is expected in most of the country; Wednesday will be warmer with a break in the rain.

Monday was cold and rainy in the north and center of the country and for the first time this season snow fell on Mount Hermon. The rain has spread to the Lakhish area and it is expected to continue until it tapers off, gradually. Wednesday will be warmer with a break in the rain and on the weekend as well. Real winter is not expected but only, at most, local showers.

During the Monday night, snow fell on Mount Hermon and a thin layer amounting to a few centimeters accumulated in the area of the lower funicular. According to Metro-Tech forecasting company data, large amounts of rain fell mainly in the northern Golan Heights and the Upper Galilee during the past 24 hours. In the northern Golan Heights 38 millimeters were recorded and in Safed 35. At Kfar Vradim there were 22 millimeters of rain and in Jerusalem 10. In Tel Aviv 16 millimeters of rain fell and Ashdod stood out with the relatively large amount of precipitation – about 23 millimeters.

On Tuesday intermittent rain is expected in the north and the center of the country, accompanied by a few thunder showers. At the summit of Mount Hermon snow is expected. There will be a steep drop in temperatures and it will be colder than average for the season: 11 degrees Centigrade in the hills and 17 degrees along the coast. There is a possibility of flooding in the Judean Desert and the Jordan Valley. The sea will be choppy to stormy, with waves between three and seven meters high. Wind speed and direction: southwesterly to northwesterly, 24 to 50 kilometers per hour.

The forecast for the rest of the week:

Wednesday: Partly cloudy with a slight rise in temperatures. Until the afternoon hours there is the possibility light rain in the north of the country and along the coast.

Thursday: Partly cloudy with no significant change in temperatures. Local rain is possible in the north and the center of the country.

Friday: Partly cloudy with no significant change in temperatures. Local rain is possible in the north and center of the country.
