Forget Coffee: New App Lets Users Wake Up to the Smell of Bacon

Oscar Mayer gives bacon fans 'a new reason to welcome their morning alarm clocks.'

Oscar Mayer has risen to the challenge of getting people out of bed in the morning: The American meat and cold cut company has created an app that wakes users up to the sound and smell of sizzling bacon.

The app is accompanied by a dongle, a device that plugs into an iPhone's headphone jack, and when the two are synced, the phone releases a whiff of bacon and a sizzle sound once the alarm is activated.

"As the category leader, Oscar Mayer is thrilled to bring the first-ever, bacon-scented mobile device to market, giving bacon aficionados a new reason to welcome their morning alarm clocks," said Tom Bick, senior director of integrated marketing and advertising at Oscar Mayer, in a statement.

"With nearly two million mentions of #bacon on Instagram, it seems people never get tired of bacon. That's why our team decided to develop a device to give folks what they long for most," said Bick.

Oscar Mayer's Institute for the Advancement of Bacon is behind the app.

The app is not being made available to the general public, but Oscar Mayer is allowing fans to apply to win the device online, which requires taking a short quiz on the website for the app.

The site also features a promotional video with a woman dreaming of bacon and a soothing man's voice saying things like, "Experience bacon with all your senses," and "Like the deepest root, like the stormiest ocean, it's briney cure endures. Bacon exceeds everything you ever imagined."
