Three of Israel’s premier academic institutions - Hebrew University, Technion – Israel Institute of Technology and Weizmann Institute of Science - are represented in this year’s ranking of the 100 leading universities in the world published Thursday by Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Hebrew University came in ahead of the pack, ranked 59th - slightly lower than last year’s 53rd. Technion was ranked 77th and Weizmann Institute, 92nd.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities is dominated, as in past years, by American and British institutions. Harvard University , Stanford University, University of California, Berkeley, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and University of Cambridge claim the top five spots. They are followed by California Institute of Technology, Princeton University, Columbia University, University of Chicago and University of Oxford.
Four additional Israeli universities cracked top 500. After the first 100, the list ranks academic institutions according to group. Tel Aviv placed in the 101-150 range, Bar Ilan and Ben Gurion in the 301-400 range, and Haifa in the 401-500 range.
Hebrew University President Menahem Ben-Sasson said that “looking at things from a long-term perspective, there is no doubt that the Hebrew University is consolidating its international status as a significant and important university. Our goal is to see the university recognized as one of the most important ones in the world, but this depends on continued funding of higher education and investment in research institutions in Israel, as well as continued cooperation with overseas research institutions.”
By discipline, Technion ranked 38th in the world in life sciences and mathematics whereas Hebrew University came in at 40th. Weizmann Institute placed in the 51-75 range and Tel Aviv University in the 76-100 range. Technion ranked 46th in engineering and computer science. Both Tel Aviv and Hebrew University rank in the 51-75 range in social sciences.
The Shanghai Jiao Tong University surveys more than 2,000 universities across the world every year and ranks the best 500. The Shanghai index is considered a particularly significant index in the academic world. The ranking is based on criteria such as the number of scientific publications, the number of Nobel Prize winners and the most cited authors in 21 different fields. Academic achievements are weighted according to the university’s size.
