Pro-Western billionaire Petro Poroshenko was confirmed the winner Thursday of Ukraine's presidential election with 54.7 percent of the vote, his predecessor told parliament.
Interim President Oleksandr Turchynov said in Kiev that he is arranging all the preparations for Poroshenko's inauguration, which must follow within 15 days of Sunday's election.
Turchynov also confirmed a victory by former boxing champion Vitali Klitschko as mayor of Kiev. Klitschko is a supporter of Poroshenko.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov have stated that Russia will respect the outcome of the presidential election. They have also said that they are open to dialogue with Poroshenko.
However, some separatist groups in Ukraine greeted Poroshenko's election with heightened violence. Dozens of separatists have been killed since the election as the Ukrainian government has launched a crackdown aimed at restoring stability to the eastern regions of the country.
