A woman from Ramat Yishai was arrested this week for allegedly pretending to have cancer in order to collect donations.
The suspect, a 50-year-old widow and mother of four, maintained a blog on TheMarker Cafe, which is part of the Haaretz group. There, she described herself as a cancer victim desperately in need of $45,000 surgery.
The suspect allegedly organized a benefit party for herself at a Tel Aviv club last week, which was attended by around 300 people, including singers and other celebrities.
All the cover charges went to the suspect's fake charity, and the party raised NIS 20,000.
Police believe the woman duped her friends as well, and had them help organize fund-raising, including the benefit party.
Head of the Northern District Police fraud investigation unit, Yigal Glaor, said the suspect probably was acting alone. Police are expected to request that the suspect be released from custody with restrictions, and that her name to be released to prevent her from acquiring more donations on fraudulent pretenses.
