The novel “Gracias,” by Pablo Katchadjian, opens with a cage of slaves that arrives on an island. The slaves have no color, the island has no name. I started to read the book during the recent and unbearably long Passover holiday, while trying to find occasional refuge from my children, who for their part were trying to dissipate their boredom by murdering each other.
