Shavit, Your entire premise is correct - but you get lost in your left-wing messianism when you bring the essay together to conclusion: There is not center-left! Its a center-right. Lapid only got the electoral victory he achieved because he eschewed - very clearly - all the rhetoric of the (wacky) left that has become irrelevant in the "New Israel" which rather resembles Reagan's, pre-Obama, "Old America": Strong traditional religious identity; reward for hard work and risk taking; and an utter rejection of liberal socialism. That is why the Israeli Left (Labor and Meretz) is irrelevant and that is why the CENTER-RIGHT, embraced, brilliantly, by Lapid, continues to reign.
