Had kibbutznik photographer Naftali Oppenheim not died accidentally at age 41, he might have become engraved in the public’s memory as an artist.
1 What astonishes me about Oppenheim’s photograph is the touch of the twigs. The woman is supposedly sleeping, lying on a bed of twigs. Despite the tranquil look on her face and the suspended animation of her sun-stippled body, the fingers spread under her nape relate that she’s not comfortable. It scratches.
