I set the alarm on my smartphone for 4 A.M., and, just to be on the safe side, for 4:05, too. The trip to Rome from Lucera, where I was staying, takes less than four hours, the organizers said, and my flight back from Rome wasn’t until 12:30 in the afternoon. Even so, I arranged to have the driver pick me up at 5 A.M., just to be sure.
