Once more a circle is closed: Joshua replaces Moses, Moses ascends the mountain and dies. The Torah eulogizes him for a few more verses, but then the scroll is rolled back to the very beginning and the reader begins to recite: "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth" (Genesis 1:1 ).

In Moses' case, the text supersedes him, describes him future - and is then granted to him on Mount Sinai; Now the Torah's text is 'realizing' its sinister ambitions: Moses wants to escape the fate decreed for him there, but is trapped by it.
