In the past three years, Yoram Kaniuk (“Yormach,” he would introduce himself on the phone) spoke with nonchalance mixed with curiosity about his approaching death. Even though he continued to insist that his days were numbered, about half a year ago he seemed to be filled with renewed optimism.
