In a conversation at Cannes, Austrian director explains what he wants viewers to experience, and why he decided to bring together two of France’s greatest actors in the twilight of their careers.

It was with slight trepidation that I arrived for my first-ever meeting with Austrian director Michael Haneke at the Cannes Film Festival last May. Haneke is responsible for some of the most jolting cinema of our time. His films are often suffused with cruelty and an icy atmosphere, and I wondered whether the director himself would project the same severity that characterizes his cinematic world.
