One day, while the illustrator Danna Donna Shamir was studying ancient printmaking techniques in Florence, Italy, she found an invitation to a birthday party in her mailbox. Opening the envelope, she discovered it wasn’t just any party, but a celebration of the bicentenary of a venerable cork oak tree in the city’s Botanical Gardens.
