The Church of Mary Magdalene is arguably one of the best-known Christian monuments in Jerusalem – at least on the outside, with its seven gleaming, golden onion-top domes rising gracefully from the slope of the Mount of Olives – and the centerpiece of pictures of Jerusalem the world over. Princess Alice was in fact the niece of Grand Duchess Elizabeth, recognized as a saint in the Russian Orthodox Church, who died a martyr's death during the Russian Revolution. Elizabeth died a nun as she had founded a religious order and entered it after the assassination of her husband. Alice's mother Victoria, Elizabeth's sister, accompanied the body of Elizabeth to Jerusalem for burial. Alice, after her divorce from her husband, became a nun in the same order founded by her aunt Elizabeth.
