Andy Ram and Yoni Erlich advanced to the quarterfinals of the men's doubles at the Australian Open by beating the Czech Republic's Frantisek Cermak and Lukas Dlouhy 6-3, 7-5 yesterday.
In the women's doubles, Shahar Peer and her partner, Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, also breezed through to the next round after easily defeating their opponents 6-3, 6-3. The Israel-Belarus duo are scheduled to play against Sania Mirza and Alicia Molik, from India and Australia, respectively.
In the girls' competition, Israel's Chen Astrugo won against Thailand's Sophia Mulsap 6-4, 7-5, while boys' singles player Gilad Ben Zvi retired from the tournament because of an injury.
Also yesterday, Russia submitted its Fed Cup roster that is expected to play against Israel in Ramat Hasharon early next month, officially confirming that world No. 5 Maria Sharapova will be participating.
