The person slated to replace Shimon Peres in the Knesset is the head of the Israel Space Agency, Major General (res.) Yitzhak Ben-Israel. Ben-Israel, who was No. 31 on the Kadima Knesset slate, is considered to be one of the most knowledgeable experts on Israel's strategic defense.
However, as of last night it was not clear whether Ben-Israel would choose to take his place in the Knesset or resign, passing the post on to Yohanan Plesner.
The 58-year-old former general is a professor at Tel Aviv University, and has received Israel's Security Prize twice. Peres' election to the presidency is expected to bring about a number of changes in Kadima, including the appointment of MK Ruhama Avraham to a ministerial post. Party whip Yoel Hasson and MK David Tal are candidates for the posts of coalition chair and Knesset House Committee chair, respectively. ()
