Shahar Peer powered her way into the semifinals of the Istanbul Cup yesterday with a 6-1, 6-2 defeat of Mara Santangelo of Italy.

Peer, who took her second career title in Prague two weeks ago, will meet Anna-Lena Groenefeld in the semifinals. The German, ranked 15 in the world, defeated Karolina Sprem of Croatia 6-4, 6-4.

Michaella Krajicek of the Netherlands also booked a place in the semis after beating Anastasiya Yakimova of Belarus 6-1, 6-0 and will face top-seeded Anastasia Myskina of Russia.

Peer is also through to the semifinals of the doubles event in Istanbul.

Meanwhile Israel's No. 4 women's player Yevgenia Savransky, ranked 241 in the world, advanced to the second qualifying round at the French Open, beating Elena Baltach of Great Britain 6-7, 6-2, 6-2.

Israel's men's players were less successful in the Roland Garros qualifiers yesterday . Harel Levy and Dudi Sela both went out in the second round. Levy lost 7-6, 7-5 to Allejandro Falla of Colombia and Sela was edged 7-6, 7-6 to Julio Silva of Brazil.
