Anna Gostomelsky met the criteria for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing by finishing 10th in the 100-meter backstroke at the European championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands, yesterday.
Gostomelsky, 26, is the first Israeli women's swimmer and fifth Israeli swimmer overall to secure a spot in Beijing.
Guy Barnea qualified for his second final at the championships by setting a new Israel record, 25.43 seconds, in the 50-meter backstroke.
Alon Mendel, 19, who survived a swim-off (a one-on-one race for the 12th semifinal spot) became the first Israeli to swim the 200-meter butterfly in less than two minutes (1:59.79), but missed on the final by just two-hundredths of a second. Nadav Kochavi did not make it past the preliminary heats in the same event.
