Israel's under-19 youth soccer team fell short of qualifying for the European Championships yesterday after playing to a 1-1 draw against Poland in Nes Tziona. The Israelis concluded the campaign with two disappointing losses and one tie, good enough for last place in a group that included Poland, Azerbaijan and Denmark. (Haaretz Sports Staff)
The Israel Defense Forces held its annual sports championships for commanding officers at the Wingate Institute near Netanya yesterday. The participants were officers from the rank of major (for men) and captain (for women). The team comprised of General Staff officers played old-time Israel national soccer players in a game of miniature soccer, which ended in a 4-4 tie. GOC Central Command Gadi Shamni captured first place in the 3,000-meter relay. (Anshel Pfeffer)
