Soccer / Champions League / Porto scrapes 2-2 draw with Man. U
British clubs Manchester United and Arsenal got off to an unimpressive start in the Champions League quarterfinals first encounter yesterday.
Manchester United came close to snatching victory from the superior-playing Porto at its home ground of Old Trafford and yet settled for a 2-2 draw.
The Red Devils defense in the first half was appalling, prompting the club's former goalie-turned-commentator Peter Schemichel to say it was their worst this season in the Champions League.
Porto's Cristian Rodriguez scored after only four minutes but the Uruguayan midfielder later followed up with a series of misses, which could have put his club further ahead. Meanwhile, Rooney took advantage of an abysmal mistake made by Porto's Bruno Alves to tie the match at 1-1. Manchester United substitute Carlos Tevez seemingly won the match for his club when he scored in the 86th minute.
But Porto's Mariano Gonzalez had the last word when he found himself alone in the penalty box, putting the ball in the back of the net in the 89th minute.
At the same time Arsenal managed to tie its away match with Spanish club Villareal 1-1. Marcos Senna put Villareal up 1-0 in the 10th minute, but Arsenal's Emmanuel Adebayor struck back, scoring through a wonderful scissors kick, making it 1-1.
Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard and Chelsea striker Didier Drogba are set to play in the Champions League quarterfinal at Anfield today after recovering from injury.
